33 miners are trapped in a copper mine in Chile, and their small mining company has had a history of lax safety record. We hope the government of Chile now enforces mining rules more strictly, even if the cost of the mining products increases. Another point to note in general is that despite advances in technology and increased emphasis on safety, at least publicly, mining remains a dangerous profession. We hope these miners are rescued safely soon.

Update: All 33 miners were safely rescued.  It is unimaginable to be trapped in a mine, knowing there is less than 1% chance of making it alive again.  This was a miracle, and we can’t count on such miracles often. All mining companies must follow safety rules to the full extent. There were lapses in this case.
